Got Questions?
-
No. You do not need a referral to make an appointment with KMV Psychology and can attend as a private client.
If you would like to access Medicare rebates, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.
You can find more information about fees and Medicare rebates on our Fees page.
-
Your first appointment is an initial assessment session. It gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy, what has been happening in your life and what you would like support with.
There is no expectation that you need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on. The first session is also an opportunity to ask questions and begin working out what might be helpful for you.

Adult and adolescent therapy sessions are 50 minutes.
Sessions for children aged 8 to 13 are generally 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the child’s age, needs and capacity to engage.
-
The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on your goals, needs and circumstances. Some people find a small number of sessions helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support.
We will regularly review your progress together and discuss what is working, what you would like to focus on, and whether ongoing sessions are helpful.
-
We understand that sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice in writing via email.
Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or appointments that are not attended, will incur the applicable cancellation fee. Medicare rebates cannot be claimed for cancelled or missed appointments.
You can find further information on our Fees page.
-
If you are eligible and have a valid referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you can receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. Your initial referral may be for up to six sessions, with additional sessions available following a review with your referring practitioner.
Medicare rebates can reduce the cost of your appointments, but a gap fee will still apply.

KMV Psychology provides therapy for children from 8 years of age, adolescents and adults.
The way therapy looks will vary depending on the person’s age, developmental stage, needs and goals.
-
For children and young people aged 13 and under, the process begins with a parent or caregiver intake session. This gives us an opportunity to understand your child’s background, current concerns and needs before meeting with them.
For young people aged 15 and under, consent from both parents is required before therapy begins, unless one parent has sole parental responsibility under a court order. Young people aged 14 - 15 do not require a parent-only intake but parents are welcome to attend the first session to provide additional information.
Young people aged 16 and 17 can generally provide their own informed consent for therapy and attend sessions independently. They can also choose the level of parent or caregiver involvement they feel is appropriate.
Following the intake, sessions are tailored to the young person’s age, needs and goals. Parent or caregiver involvement may form part of therapy where appropriate, while also supporting the young person’s privacy and growing independence.
-
Yes. What you discuss with your psychologist is generally kept private and confidential.
There are some circumstances where information may need to be shared, including where there are serious concerns about your safety or someone else’s safety, where there are concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child, or where disclosure is required by law.
For children and adolescents, we aim to balance the young person’s privacy with appropriate parent or caregiver involvement. How this works will be discussed at the beginning of therapy so that everyone has a clear understanding of confidentiality and its limits.
